Kings don’t want anyone else to take their throne….

Kings don’t want anyone else to take their throne. Politicians don’t want anyone to take their place. A rich person doesn’t want poor people to become as rich and influential as he is.

Once, when I was traveling in India by foot to a program, I noticed a huge sugar mill. The local people told me that the owner of the mill had been approached to open a high school for that area, and he had replied, “If I do that and my employees’ children get educated, then where will I find labour for my mills? They’ll all want to be office workers”.

So people don’t want others to have the same opportunities as they have. They want to suppress others. Society is like that. The strong oppresses the weak. A poor man’s voice is not heard. You see this and will continue to see it. But this doesn’t apply to spirituality and spiritual people.

The uniqueness of spirituality is that God is the shelter of the weak. Contrary to the materialistic outlook of most people, spiritual people say that human beings are the temple of the divine energy. After all whatever we have achieved in this world has been due to our human energy.

Man in himself is not a problem. Realized souls say that the power to solve the world’s problems lies with man himself. Saints have never considered mankind to be a burden on earth. Saint Tulsidas described the human life form as being ‘just right for spiritual endeavours and the gateway to liberation’. God has granted us the boon of the human body so that we can achieve the state of Nirvana.

If we wish, we can use it for our own good. We can experience divine love in ourselves and share it with others. We have been given all the resources. For example, we have here a microphone and loudspeakers. It is up to us whether good or bad thoughts are transmitted through them.

Perfection

Meditate unceasingly, that you quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. Cease being a prisoner of the body; using the secret key of Kriya, learn to escape into Spirit.
—Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya, in “Autobiography of a Yogi”
