There is no happiness in following the ways of the world.

There is no happiness in following the
ways of the world.

Questioner: There are some people
who want what others have. If they see others
with a car, then they want it too.
Dadashri: When does lokasangnya
arise (lokasangnya—to be dictated by societal
influence)? It occurs when one is not satisfied
from within. Until today, I have not found
a single man to give me bliss. Even when I
was young, I did not find a need to keep a
radio. Are these all not live radios walking
around. One is prone to be dictated by the
ways of the world when there is greed within.
The real meaning of satisfaction is samatrushna
equanimity amidst desire.
People will say that happiness lies in
money, but there are some Sadhus—ascetics
—who will not accept money even if you
offered it to them. Even if you give me all the
gold in the world, I would not accept it because
I do not find happiness in money or
wealth at all. Happiness does not lie in money.
If it did then every one will derive happiness
from it. Whereas everyone will experience bliss
derived from the Soul because it is real happiness;
it is eternal happiness. There is so much
anand bliss in the Self that you cannot even
imagine it.

Balance

I will be calmly active, actively calm. I will not become lazy and mentally ossified. Nor will I be overactive, able to earn money but unable to enjoy life. I will meditate regularly to maintain true balance.

Right Activity

If we are at peace within our beings, we can harmoniously carry on our duties even in the business sphere. We can accomplish admirable things in the world without necessarily clashing with others. After our day’s work is over we can retire within to be with God again. Eventually, even in the business world, we can perform all our duties with the full consciousness of God’s presence.
If we are calm and peaceful, come what may — success or seeming failure — we remain even-minded, feeling the certainty that His will is being done.
—Sri Sri Rajarsi Janakananda, “Rajarsi Janakananda: Great Western Yogi”

Right Activity

You came to earth to accomplish a divine mission [to be reunited with God]. Realize how tremendously important that is! Do not allow the narrow ego to obstruct your attainment of an infinite goal.

A beautiful girl was pregnant. Her angry parents demanded to know the father.

A beautiful girl was pregnant. Her angry parents demanded to know the father. Though at first the girl was hesitant but scared of embarrassment, the girl finally pointed at the enlightened master of the village. When the outraged parents confronted the Master with the daughter’s accusation, he simply stayed calm and just replied “Is that so?”

When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Master, who now was now viewed as an outsider by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. “Is that so?” Master said calmly as he accepted the child.

For months, the Master took very good care of the child until the daughter could no longer withstand the lie she had told. She confessed that the real father was a young man in the village whom she had tried to protect. The parents immediately went to the Master to see if he would return the baby. With profuse apologies they explained what had happened. “Is that so?” Master said as he handed them the child.

Effort

All the experiences I have told you about are scientifically attainable. If you follow the spiritual laws, the result is certain. If the result doesn’t come, find fault with your effort. Intensity in all your religious practices is the only way. Those who don’t meditate regularly and deeply are restless whenever they do meditate, and give up after a short effort. But if you make a greater effort day by day, the ability to go deep will come. I don’t have to make any effort now; the whole world is gone instantly when I close my eyes and gaze into the Kutastha Center [the spiritual eye, in the forehead between the eyebrows].
